speech at Orange Rotary Club

Today I made a presentation about Japan at Orange Rotary club (my host club). I covered my profile, my sponsor club (Kawasaki North RC), Kawasaki & Yokohama City, my working & private days in Japan, and environmental trivia. I hope environmental trivia gives some interesting perspective about Japanese environmental policy such as warm-biz/cool-biz or toilet usage.

今日はホスト先のオレンジロータリークラブで卓話をさせていただいた。自分の経歴やスポンサーである川崎北ロータリークラブについて、川崎や横浜の街について、写真を使いながら典型的な日本の会社員の一日と私生活を紹介した。最後に、日本の環境トリビアと題して、日本の環境への取り組みを紹介した。例えば、クールビズやウォームビズなど従来のビジネス文化までを変えている日本の環境への取り組みにアメリカも触発されることを期待しながら。トイレの大・小のレバーは資源を大事にする日本が世界に誇る発明であることも紹介した。

honorable day

I've been thinking of performing Yosakoi dance (Japanese dance) for about a year. Today is the day. I was not sure that this form of art (not for fun, not like disco, just as simple as art) would be accepted to the audience in US, but it was!! After the 4'30-min dance followed by some presentation about Yosakoi dance with all my spirit, I received a standing standing ovation from the audience. I've never imagined it. I received a trophy among male performers. Among the honorable compliment I received, the most moving remark was "I was touched and almost crying". As a dance performer, it was the most happiest reaction ever!! I'm certain that this art and impression is able to transcend cultures and countries. Furthermore, Asian students seemed inspired to advocate their own culture as Asia is somewhat underrepresented in the West.

去年の今頃から、アメリカで絶対ヨサコイを踊りたいと考えていた。そして今日がその日。正直、アメリカで日本的な芸術が受け入れられるか心配だった。踊りと言えばディスコ（日本で言うクラブ）で自由に踊ることが基本のここ自由の国アメリカで、振り付けもぴったり息の合った日本の踊りが受け入れられるのか・・・？4分30秒、長いようで短い演舞を終えると、観客の学生たちが立ち上がって歓声をくれた。「あまりに感動して泣きそうだった」と言ってくれた友達もいた。踊り子としてこんなに嬉しいコメントはない。感動は国境や文化を越えることを実感した。そしてアジア人が「自分たちも何かしなきゃ」と思ってくれたことが大きな成果だった。参加15チームの中で優勝トロフィーをもらった。

Orange Rotary Club visit

Today I joined my first Rotary meeting at Orange Rotary Club, my host club here in Connecticut. Rotarians there were very friendly and I enjoyed listening to Yale Divinity School alumna who are buiding a magnet school back in her home contry, Kenya with the donation from Orange Rotary Club. She inspires me a lot to make great contribution to Rotary which gave me an opportunity to study abroad.

今日はこちらでの受け入れロータリークラブであるオレンジロータリークラブの例会に初参加した。オレンジロータリークラブはYaleのキャンパスから車で20分ほどのところにある自然豊かな町。ロータリアンの方々はみな親切で、今日はYaleの神学校の卒業生で彼女の母国であるケニアでの学校建設の状況（オレンジロータリークラブの寄付金によるもの）を伺った。彼女の話を聞いて、近い将来、自分もロータリーにどうやったら恩返しが出来るだろうと考えるよい機会になった。

international fair

This Friday, unlike regular TGIF (Thanks God It's "Forestry"!) in our school, we had a international TGIF which our school officially sponsored. Even though it rained so badly (a road on which our school stands was like Mississippi River), many prospective students after attending Open House (our school admission event), students & faculty from our school and other graduate school came and enjoyed foods from all around the world (more than 300 people)!! It was a great success to improve people's awareness & understanding of international diversity at Yale Forestry & Environmental School. I am honored to be in charge of organizing, operating & "cleaning-up" of this event. I LOVE this school!!

今日は学校説明会の後に、インターナショナルフェアが開かれた。土砂降りの大雨にも関わらず、狭い会場に300人を超す大盛況で、Yaleで学ぶ学生、教授陣、スタッフに各国料理を堪能してもらいながら、私の学ぶForestry & Environmental Schoolの国際色豊かな一面を披露することができた。このイベントの企画、運営、後片付けの責任者を務めさせてもらい、学校が始まって2か月、何かひとつ大きな達成感を覚えることができた。この学校で学べることを本当に幸せだと実感。

Preparing for Halloween

Today our Forestry Club for which I'm one of the elected members organized a pumpkin curving TGIF. Some US students were excited to do after light years; most international students enjoyed curving for the first time. It was a great experience to share American culture.

今日は私が委員を務めるForestry Clubの毎週金曜企画(TGIF)で、2週間後に迫ったハロウィーン用にカボチャのくりぬき企画を行った。アメリカの学生は小学校以来の体験を楽しんでいたし、ほとんどの留学生は初めての体験にとまどいながらも楽しんでいた。こうやって、留学生としてアメリカの文化を身をもって体験できるのは非常にありがたい機会だと思った。

Real Ambassador

This evening Japan's Ambassador to the United States of America had a lecture and talk at Yale. He began with "One of the biggest characteristics in Japan's foreign policy is our 'passive diplomacy'". His brave confession brought laughter in the audience. In other words, his remarks revealed Japan has not had aggressive foreign policy ever... However, there were many interesting questions and lively interactions afterwards.

今日は駐米日本大使がYaleで講演をされるということで聴きに行った。冒頭、「日本外交の最大の特徴は『受身外交』であることです」という発言に、会場は笑いに包まれた。ただ、とらえ方によっては日本は能動外交をしてこなかった、という誤解を与えかねないのでちょっと心配だったが、Q&Aセッションでは興味深い質問や活発な議論が聴けて非常に参考になった。

career workshop under beautiful foliage

This weekend I participated in a workshop where I had some advice from the lecturer and friends about my career. I didn't know how I can possibly combine my background & current study altogether to achieve my career goal as an environmental project manager under international organization, which I'm having in my mind. I strongly felt I needed to clarify my vision statement after graduation. It was a great opportunity to think about my future under the beautiful autumn leaves.

この週末は自分のキャリアを考えるセミナーに参加した。これまでの経験と現在の勉強をいかにつなぎ合わせて、国際機関で環境保全のプロジェクトマネージャとして働きたいという自分のキャリアゴールを達成するか、その道筋がどうしても分からなかったが、講師の方や友人からアドバイスをもらう中で、卒業後の自分のビジョンについて明文化する必要を痛感した。美しい紅葉の下、自分のキャリアを考えることが出来たよいセミナーだった。

Asia Promotion

Here in Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies there are many Asian students. But often, Asia is underrepresented probably because of Asian people's nature. So during my 2 years at Yale I've set my mission to promote public awareness toward Asian contries, cultures, and people. Tonight is my first trial! I organized an Asian food potluck: Asian students bring their local dish and non Asian students bring soda or snack. Isn't it Win-Win solution?! It was successful for the first try. I'll keep organizing it. Next time I'll invite more people to join. Food is always easiest way to get people connected to other cultures!!

Yaleの環境大学院では、多くのアジア人学生が勉強しているのに、アジア人の（恥ずかしがり屋の）気質からか、あまりアジアがクローズアップされないでいる。そこで、ここで学ぶ2年間の間に、アジアの国、文化、民族に対する認識向上を図ろうと思う。日本だけじゃなくアジアとしての国際親善！そして今夜が最初の実験。アジアンフードパーティーを企画した。アジア人は自国の料理を持ってきて、その他の人たちはジュースや、ビールやお菓子を持参。初回のわりには成功したと思う。2回目、3回目と規模をだんだん大きくしていければ・・・。料理はいつでも異文化をより近く感じる近道だと思う！

Under the beautiful fall sky we gathered in Worcester, MA: all the inbound Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars to US, outbound scholars from US, and Rotarians. I loved people there with enthusiasm, passion, energy, hospitality, and warmth. Every positive aspect that I can think of was there. I'm glad to establish friendship during this event and I thank for warm welcomes from Rotarians. Now my mission as Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar has begun. Even it has just begun I feel so happy that I'm here as Rotary Ambassodorial Scholar. Rotary brings so much happiness and possibilities to my life! Well, I'm excieted to get involved!

紅葉も少しずつ始まってきた秋晴れの空の下、マサチューセッツ州ウースターのあるホテルにニューイングランド地方のロータリー国際親善奨学生たちおよびロータリアンの方々が集まった。このイベントでこれから留学に出かけるアメリカ人の友人やアメリカに留学に来ている各国の留学生と出会い、友達を作ることができた。そしてロータリアンの方々から温かい歓迎をいただいた。国際親善奨学生としてのミッションは始まったばかりなのに、本当にこの奨学金をいただいて留学出来て幸せだと思う。最も感化されたのは、２０日間で南アメリカを２０００ｋｍ歩いてエイズに対する啓蒙活動を行った学友のスピーチ。足はボロボロになりながら、２０日間で２２のロータリークラブを回り、スピーチをし、募金活動を行った２人の学友はとても生き生きとしていて、楽しそうだった。
さぁ、自分もこれから。いろいろアイディアを練ろう！
